August Passion

$1,900.00

I began this portrait in the sweltering heat of August while studying at the Contemporary Mosaic School in Spilimbergo, Italy. Renowned for its innovative approach to portraiture, the school had long been on my wish list, and the opportunity to learn there became a pivotal moment in my artistic journey.

In just two days of intensive study, I was able to begin this portrait of fellow artist Rosario, whose calm presence and quiet confidence immediately drew me in. Her cool-toned face contrasts with a halo of tightly curled hair crafted from wire and tempered glass, as though shaped by the heat and energy of the Italian summer itself. Gold elements catch and reflect the light, creating a sense of movement and radiance around her.

The experience in Spilimbergo profoundly influenced my approach to mosaic portraiture. After returning home, I continued developing the piece, blending the techniques I learned in Italy with my own distinctive use of picassiette—incorporating dishes and found ceramics—to create a visual language uniquely my own.

For me, August Passion represents both a portrait and a turning point: a celebration of artistic growth, creative discovery, and the joy of finding new ways to express what has always been within.

Rosario is #56 in my ongoing series of mosaic portraits of contemporary artists from around the world.
